From Suffering to Strength: My Chronic Illness Journey and the Passion That Fueled My Purpose
By Kristie Calise, Board Certified Integrative & Functional Nutrition Practitioner
I’ve never shared my full story publicly—until now. As someone who helps others uncover the root causes of chronic symptoms, I believe it’s time to tell you how I got here… because it didn’t start in a classroom or a textbook. It started with a burning rash on Christmas Day.
The Day Everything Changed…
It was December 2016. I was having dinner with my (now) husband and his family when suddenly, my face, chest, and back flushed with heat. Not just red—scorching! It felt like someone had set my skin on fire. We chalked it up to “something I ate,” but that moment became the beginning of a downward spiral I never saw coming.
That rash became a daily occurrence. And it didn’t stop there.
Over the next two years, I developed asthma-like breathing issues, chronic rashes, debilitating fatigue, intense anxiety and depression, and relentless gut symptoms doctors casually labeled “IBS.” All while working full-time in the fitness industry and watching my health slip away without explanation.

🛑 The Diagnostic Dead End
Like so many others living with chronic illness, I was dismissed over and over again:
- ⚫ “Your labs look fine.”
- ⚫ “You don’t have any allergies.”
- ⚫ “Try this inhaler.”
- ⚫ “Stop obsessing over your symptoms.”
- ⚫ “Maybe see a different specialist.”
I was passed from one provider to the next—each one shrugging their shoulders as my symptoms worsened. The medical system failed me, and I was left to figure it out on my own.
🌿 Becoming My Own Advocate
Eventually, I did what so many of us end up doing—I became my own researcher. I listened to podcasts. I attended webinars. I scoured blogs and medical journals, often with tears in my eyes and hope in my heart.
I self-diagnosed myself with MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome) and POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). I realized my body was reacting to food with intense adrenaline surges—racing heart, high blood pressure, episodes that mimicked seizures and panic attacks. Mealtimes became terrifying.
Ironically, the pandemic was a blessing in disguise. It allowed me to shift to remote work and begin attending virtual appointments with functional practitioners. I finally had space to rest—and to dig deeper.
I learned that:
- ⚫ MCAS can trigger POTS
- ⚫ MCAS is often linked to mold illness
- ⚫ Mold and Lyme often coexist
One by one, the puzzle pieces fell into place.
❤️🩹 Finding Healing and a Calling
It’s been four years since I started truly addressing the root causes of my illness. I’ve spent thousands of hours and dollars chasing answers. Some practitioners made me worse. Others gave up on me. But I never gave up on myself.
I’m not “healed”—but I’m healing. And today, I’m stronger than I’ve been in years.
I’m proud to now be a Board Certified Integrative & Functional Nutrition Practitioner. But more than that, I’m someone who gets it. I know what it’s like to be gaslit, dismissed, and left in the dark. And I’ve turned that pain into a deep passion to help others find hope and healing faster than I did. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from personal experience and the research — it’s this.
