Why I Created Balance: Chronic Illness Care After Nearly a Decade of Chronic Illness
Balance: Chronic Illness Care was created from both professional expertise and lived experience with complex chronic illness.
I’m Kristie Calise, an Exercise Physiologist, Board Certified Integrative & Functional Nutrition Practitioner, and founder of the Balance App.
But long before Balance became the chronic illness care app it is today, I was the patient desperately trying to understand what was happening to my own body.
For nearly a decade, my life was impacted by mystery symptoms, medical gaslighting, and complex chronic illness. And that experience ultimately became my reason for creating Balance.

My Chronic Illness Story
Before I became chronically ill, health and fitness were already a huge part of my life. I was an Exercise Physiologist. I owned a fitness studio. I competed in bodybuilding. Movement was something my body could simply DO.
Then everything changed.
My health journey began with strange histamine-related symptoms like flushing, unusual reactions, and food sensitivities. Over time, my symptoms became increasingly systemic and disruptive.
Eventually, I found myself navigating conditions including mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), POTS, and CIRS/mold-related illness.
There were days when standing upright felt like exercise. My heart rate became unpredictable. My nervous system felt completely overwhelmed. Foods I had eaten my entire life suddenly caused reactions.
The body I had trusted for years no longer felt predictable. And perhaps one of the hardest parts was trying to get someone to understand how sick I actually felt.
When Chronic Illness Is Invisible
Like many people living with complex or invisible chronic illness, I spent years trying to find answers.
I went to appointments. I had testing done. I tried to clearly explain symptoms that did not fit neatly into one medical specialty.
And far too often, I left feeling dismissed.
Sometimes symptoms were attributed to stress or anxiety. Sometimes normal-looking test results seemed to end the conversation even though I knew my body was not functioning normally.
That experience changed me.
It also taught me how important self-advocacy can become when you are navigating an illness that other people cannot always see.
I recently had the opportunity to share this part of my story with the Change the Air Foundation, a nonprofit focused on education, research, and advocacy surrounding healthy indoor air and mold-related illness.
In my article, “Medical Gaslighting: What to Do When Doctors Dismiss You,” I share more about my experience with mold-related illness and medical dismissal, along with five practical strategies I learned for advocating for yourself during medical appointments.
But my chronic illness journey did more than change the way I approached medical appointments. It completely changed the way I thought about wellness.
Chronic Illness Changed What “Healthy” Looked Like
Before getting sick, I came from the traditional fitness world.
- ▪️Work harder.
- ▪️Lift heavier.
- ▪️Push yourself.
- ▪️Be consistent.
- ▪️Do the workout even when you do not feel like doing the workout.
But chronic illness taught me very quickly that a body experiencing POTS, inflammation, mast cell symptoms, fatigue, nervous system dysregulation, or a flare cannot always follow the same plan every day.
- ▪️Sometimes movement helped me.
- ▪️Sometimes pushing harder made everything worse.
- ▪️Sometimes I needed strength training.
- ▪️Sometimes I needed five minutes of gentle stretching on the floor.
- ▪️Sometimes I needed nervous system regulation.
- ▪️Sometimes I needed nourishing food and hydration.
And sometimes? I genuinely needed to REST.
I began realizing that so many of the wellness tools available to me were designed for bodies that behaved predictably.
Mine did not. And I knew I was far from the only person experiencing that problem.
The “Why” Behind Balance: Chronic Illness Care
That is ultimately why I created Balance: Chronic Illness Care.
I wanted to create the type of wellness app I desperately needed during the hardest years of my own illness.
Not another traditional fitness app telling someone with chronic fatigue or POTS to push harder. Not another platform that makes you feel like you failed because you could not complete today’s workout. And not simply another place to record how terrible you feel.
I wanted Balance to help answer a much more useful question:
What would support my body today?
Because the answer can change!
On a good day, you may have the capacity to build strength. On a lower-energy day, seated movement or mobility may feel better. During a flare, your body may benefit from nervous system support, foundational lifestyle habits, nourishing food, or complete rest.
That is why Balance was built with different tools for different days.
What Is Balance: Chronic Illness Care?
Balance: Chronic Illness Care is an all-in-one wellness app created specifically for people living with chronic symptoms and fluctuating capacity.
Inside Balance, we focus on four primary areas of support:
Gentle and Adaptable Movement
The Movement Library includes strengthening, gentle workouts, seated and floor-based movement, mobility, stretching, POTS-friendly options, and support for both higher-capacity and lower-capacity days.
Nervous System Regulation
The Reset side of Balance includes guided meditations, breathwork, Yoga Nidra, progressive muscle relaxation, grounding practices, and other tools designed to help create moments of calm and rest.
Foundational Daily Habits
The Balance BaSIX helps members return to simple lifestyle foundations like sleep, hydration, protein, morning light, colorful whole foods, and mindfulness.
Chronic-Illness-Friendly Recipes
The Recipe Vault provides simple, nourishing, anti-inflammatory recipes with common chronic illness dietary needs and food sensitivities in mind.
These pieces exist together because that is how chronic illness actually works. Your body is not just exercise. It is not just nutrition. It is not just stress. And it certainly does not have the same needs every single day.
Built by Someone Who Gets It
My professional education as an Exercise Physiologist and Functional Nutrition Practitioner shapes the tools and education inside Balance. But my own chronic illness experience shapes something equally important:
the WAY those tools are delivered.
I know what it feels like to want your old life back. I know what it feels like when a “simple” workout is no longer simple. I know what it feels like to cancel plans, react to foods, question every symptom, and spend far too much of your life trying to figure out what your body is doing. And I know what it feels like to slowly start rebuilding.
Balance was created from that place.
Not to promise a cure. Not to tell you that you can wellness-routine your way out of every chronic condition. But to give you practical ways to support the body you have today while continuing to build toward the life you want.

Turning Pain Into Purpose
I would never have chosen the years I spent sick. But I can choose what I do with what they taught me.
Today, a huge part of my purpose is helping people with chronic illness feel less alone, more empowered, and better equipped to care for themselves in everyday life.
That includes talking openly about topics like medical gaslighting and mold illness. It includes advocating for patients whose symptoms have been dismissed. And it includes continuing to build Balance: Chronic Illness Care into the resource I wish I had when my own health first fell apart.
If medical gaslighting has been part of your chronic illness journey too, I encourage you to read my guest article for the Change the Air Foundation:
